First Appearance: Transformers #4

"I have no need
for friends, even
less for enemies."

Just like Grimlock, I always liked my toys to look more like the cartoon.  That's why I painted the head red. A mint condition, un-altered Slag toy has black head and clear eyes in dino mode.  Click HERE to see a picture taken by Jon/Karl Hartman in Tomarts Magazine.

Profile: Maybe slag enjoys his job too much –after all, a more sensitive Autobot might regret the waste involved in reducing an enemy to a smoldering pool of liquid metal. Not Slag. If his metal hide could take the heat, Slag would swim in the puddle to celebrate. Perhaps even more than his Dinobot brethren, Slag resents the authority of Optimus Prime, and he’s not too keen on the other Autobots either. He’s generally considered a disruptive force and has been known to get into brawls and turn his fiery breath against his comrades. Nasty and mean-spirited are perhaps the nicest things one can say about him.

Abilities: In Dinobot mode, Slag can spew from his mouth a bolt of 3,000 degrees Centigrade flame up to 80 feet. He possesses enormous strength and can shatter a brick building with a single blow from his armored head. In Autobot mode he carries a high-energy laser rifle.

Weaknesses: Slag is his own worst enemy. His misanthropic personality often persuades some of the other Autobots not to help him when he’s in trouble. He’s rash and not too bright, qualities which often put him in dangerous predicaments.

It's worth noting that the Dinobots had their origins told in 2 different ways. In the cartoons, the Autobots designed and built the Dinobots in 1985.  In the comics, the Ark built them to combat Shockwave immediately after the Ark's fateful crash on earth 4 million years ago.

However, considering all of the other more recently told stories of Slag and the other Dinobots on Cybertron prior to the Ark's fateful crash on Earth, 4 million years ago (like the War Within storyline...).   I like to believe that Ratchet and Wheeljack did RE-build the Dinobots on earth in 1985.  That they were aboard the Ark when it crashed, just that those 5 were too heavily damaged for Teletran One to bring them back to life the way it did for the other Autobots.  That it took Wheeljack's experimental personality and intelligence programming to bring their sparks back online...   Hey, why not?

Other Appearances:  Slag did re-appear in 2 different recolored versions of TF generation 2.  Although he was not given a new form in Beast Wars, his name was widely used by most characters as a 'Cybertronian cuss word!'  For example, "...awe, slag...!" or "...figure out what the slaggin' problem is..."

Furthermore, Slag has another connection to BW:TF.  I used to think the BW character "Dinobot" was named after them.  Now, considering the enormous role "Dinobot" played in TF and human evolution, I like to think it was the other way around!  That with Optimus Prime sharing the spark of O Primal, Prime learned of Dinobot's courage and heroic actions saving the human race and named this group the "Dinobots" as an homage to the BW character.
